Investments
Uncommon talent, experience, and tools combine to create proprietary investment strategies and custom-tailored portfolios.
Before we give investment advice, we build a relationship starting with values, priorities, goals, and trust – that matters most. That is why we take the time to go through a thorough discovery process to get a deep and personal understanding of the client, his or her life’s purpose, goals, and risk tolerance. Plenty of firms have a process like that, and we think the quality of our people and the time we take set ours apart.
Because there is no one-size-fits-all investment portfolio, and because a “pick a number” equity/bond asset allocation isn’t right for many clients, we work to design an investment portfolio tailored for each client. Van Hulzen features our deeply researched and carefully analyzed core asset allocation model built on factors that have been shown to be correlated with higher return or lower risk over time. We have brought together deep investing talent, built a disciplined decision-making process, and work with discipline to do the research, perform the analysis, and make math-driven decisions on fund selection and asset allocation in our core models. Our Advisory Investment Committee meets weekly to evaluate market conditions and our portfolios' performance, and we make periodic adjustments to position our clients with balance for the road ahead.
Then, based on each client’s needs, objectives, and risk tolerance, we consider whether complementary sleeves from among our established individual equity and options strategies are a good fit. They are designed to offer the potential for higher return at the same risk or a chance for the same return at lower risk than allocation models alone. Our Investment Committee builds on its talent and strengths in equity selection and options to optimize these proprietary sleeves on a continuing basis. Because Van Hulzen doesn't earn any revenue from any of our investment strategies, the client's best interest is the only factor in evaluating the portfolio recommendation. Building a custom portfolio for each client from among these strategies is where our uncommon investment talent, tools, hard work in the Investment Committee, and track record really shine. For more information on equity and option strategies, visit our Asset Management business unit site at www.vaminstitutional.com
Bottom line, we invest for the long-term, make adjustments to stay positioned as markets move, and use a disciplined, math-based approach to set our strategies. This lets us create elegant investment solutions with which clients can feel connected.

Financial Planning
We understand clients deeply and build a "LIFE-SHAPED" retirement plan.
Care and listening is the foundation of what we do to ensure we truly get to know clients and their unique interests, goals, and purpose. We work as a team and use our proprietary VIP Discovery Process to gain an understanding of the great events and small details of clients’ lives and what matters most so we can build an income, saving, investment, and spending plan that helps clients live their best lives without worrying “Do I have enough?”.
Then, because life is always changing, we check in as we go along and update the retirement plan to make sure what we’re using to advise clients reflects their evolving life trajectory. We can model major decisions like buying real estate, leaving a legacy to heirs or to charity, or retiring early, so clients don’t have to decide and hope the money will last.
small Business Advisory
We help business owners think about how to sell their business.
Deep listening, good partners, a sound process, and weighing both financial goals and life satisfaction lead to happy outcomes.
Transitioning a business, whether to a family member, trusted co-workers, a synergistic buyer, or a financial partner is among the most sensitive and impactful decisions any business owner will ever make. Being able to explore how that process might go, ask and be asked questions, develop some initial ideas on what will matter to buyers, how the price, terms, and tax components will work, and get a referral to our trusted business M&A partner is something clients can do in a safe, confidential environment with their Van Hulzen team.
Estate & Tax Quarterbacking
No client wants to pay more tax than they need to.
Withdrawal sequencing, asset location, charitable bundling, tax-deferral via real estate and retirement plans, and tax avoidance strategies can have a real impact on a family’s balance sheet. We look at your full picture and recommend tax deferment and avoidance strategies that can help you keep more of what you’ve earned. We keep track of the changing tax landscape to plan for what's ahead. And we can help choose a proactive, thoughtful CPA who will do more than input documents and report back the amount of tax due.
Thoughtful estate planning can save big down the road.
Many clients are looking for a partner to help them increase the benefits they gain from their assets today while reducing estate taxes tomorrow. We support clients with ideas for efficient trust structures for themselves and their kids, and help make sure assets will flow where clients intend in case the unexpected happens. We make recommendations for an estate planning attorney who will listen and create thoughtful structures that fit client needs. And we stay on top of legal changes to ensure each client is optimally positioned to take advantage of the latest rules and laws that could affect their estates.
Deep Relationships
If we don’t create emotional security alongside good financial outcomes, clients won’t feel at ease.
Quality people who care are the key.
From the experiences of the hundreds of families we’ve worked with, we understand how our clients' relationship with their money and those they trust to care for their money directly impacts the way they experience life. The healthier these relationships are, the more peaceful they can feel in their daily lives. The more doubt they have with these relationships, the more stress they feel.
That is why we seek high quality people who care and act with integrity to ensure that we’re deepening trust with every interaction. We find joy when we help our clients achieve the financial and emotional security to live out their life’s purpose with confidence. It is a special feeling when we see this trust live on as we work with our clients’ children.
Insurance Solutions
Some risks in life can be MINIMIZed and afforded should they occur. Others should be mitigated with insurance. Know which are which.
We can help clients tell the difference between risks to insure and risks to absorb, and recommend insurance tactics that make sense, only when they make sense. As fiduciaries, we only recommend policies after we have looked at the client's entire picture and walked them through the process of evaluating whether, what type, and how much life, disability, and long-term care insurance to own. We also check that homeowner’s and umbrella policies are adequate as part of our financial planning process. And we can help business owners evaluate life and key person needs in the context of buy-sell agreements.
